What changed, and when

Yomiya is a little reading shop for people learning Japanese. The idea is one sentence long. Every story is written for one reader, from the words that reader has actually read.

Most learners one to three years in have the same problem. Flashcards are going well and real Japanese is still a wall. A graded reader is finished in a week. A news article is pitched at a journalist, not at you. So reading keeps getting postponed, and reading is the thing that builds reading.

A story written against your own word list fixes the pitch. Roughly 95% of it is already yours, the rest is seeded on purpose and glossed on tap. Every tap edits the word list, so tomorrow’s story fits better than today’s.

Reading. You cannot yet tap through a word set, pick a topic and get a story written for you. That is being built now, and it is the only thing being built. Nothing on this site takes a payment today.

We say this plainly because the Japanese-learning community is sceptical of machine-written study material, and it is right to be. Unnatural Japanese and invented grammar are real failures of real products. Our answer is not a promise, it is the sample on the home page and every story after it. Judge the Japanese, not the claim.
